Research Organizations

The Dederiyeh Neanderthal web site was supported by a number of sources, both individual and institutional. First of all, I should like to express my sincere gratitude to the two organizations of the Dederiyeh excavation project and the Dederiyeh resuscitation project.

Listed below is important information from the past 10 years that deal with these two projects.

Organization of the Dederiyeh Excavation Project
The actual excavation of the Dederiyeh Cave was completed during a total of eleven field seasons between 1989 and 2001 (no excavating was conducted in 1991 and 1992). Throughout the project, the field research was supported by a number of sources, both individual and institutional.

First of all, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Najah Al-Attar, the Minister of Culture, Syrian Arab Republic, for her generous permit allowing us to undertake our excavation project at Dederiyeh cave. We are also much indebted to Dr. Adnan Bounni, Director, Department of Excavations, Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums, SAR; the late Dr. Nasib Saliby, Co-Director, Department of Excavations, Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums, SAR; Dr. Abdal Razaq Moaz, Director General, Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums, SAR; Dr. Mohamed Kadour, Director, Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums, SAR; Dr. Bassam Jamous, Director, Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums, SAR; and Dr. Wahid Khayata, Director, Department of Antiquities and Museums of Aleppo, SAR, who gave us great help.

Our sincere thanks are also due to help and advice from Professor Ofer Bar-Yosef, Harvard University, USA, Professor Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, President of the University of Tokyo, Japan; Professor Masanori Aoyagi, Vice-President of the University of Tokyo, Japan; Professor Georges Tate, Universite des Saint Quentin en Yvelines, France; Dr. Alice Naccache, Universite des Saint Quentin en Yvelines, France; Dr. Gen Suwa, University of Tokyo, Japan; Dr. Anne-Marie Tillier, Bordeaux University, France; Professor Nobutoshi Yamazaki, Keio University, Japan; and Professor Yoshiaki Nishino, University of Tokyo, Japan.

We would like to thank to the Direction General of the Syrian Department of Antiquities and Museums, the Ministry of Culture (SAR), the University of Tokyo, and the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, Kyoto, and also to the successive Japanese ambassadors to Syria-the late Mr. Ryuji Onoda, Mr. Minoru Kubota, Mr. Tomio Uchida, Mr. Takeshi Kagami, and Mr. Kishichiro Amae, and the staff of the Japanese Embassy, and the late Mr. Misao Orita (Nippon Koei Co.), and Dr. Giro Orita (ICARDA, SAR).

The major source of finance support was Japanese Grant-in-Aid for Overseas Scientific Research Foundation, and on behalf of the project team, we wish to express our thanks to the Foundation for the following grants: G-01041016 (1989-1991), G-05041006 (1993-1995), G-08041007 (1996-1998), G-10301021 (1998-2001), and G-11691049 (1999-2001), without which the successful accomplishment of this undertaking would have been impossible. Additional funds have been generously provided by the Mitsubishi Foundation (1987,1995-1997), the Toyota Foundation (1998-2001), and the Daido Life Foundation (1998, 2000, 2001). We would also like to thank the following Japanese organizations and their staff, who gave their time and special knowledge to various sections of the project: Asia Air Survey Co., Ltd.; Hitachi, Ltd.; NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Corporation); Kyoto Kagaku Co., Ltd.; Sony Corporation, Texnai Inc.; Toppan Printing Co., Ltd.; and UNISN Inc.
