International workshop on self-compacting concrete

Guide for participants

 Background and scope

Self-compacting concrete, requiring no consolidation work to the structure, was first proposed in 1986 as a means to achieve durable concrete structures. After the successful development of its prototype in 1988, intensive studies on self-compacting concrete have been carried out by researchers from academic circles, general contractors and material makers in Japan and its use in actual structures has gradually been increasing. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the world longest suspension bridge with a main span of 1,991m, opened in April 1998, uses self-compacting concrete for its two anchorages.

In order for self-compacting concrete to be widely used and accepted as the standard concrete rather than a special concrete, it is necessary that an international network on self-compacting concrete be established. The aim of the network is to promote information exchange and research activities on self-compacting concrete which is an innovative construction material toward the 21st century.

This international workshop, to be held at Kochi University of Technology, Kochi, Japan, is the first attempt to pull together researchers as well as practical engineers in the field of concrete in order to establish the aforementioned network.

 Kochi
Kochi Prefecture is a deep mountainous land with spectacular cliffs and scenic rocky beaches in the west and flat sandy beaches in the east surrounded by brilliant blue sea. It is one of the largest but most sparsely populated prefectures in Japan. Situated in the southern island of Shikoku, Kochi is blessed with a sunny mild climate. The Seto Ohashi Bridge and the newly opened Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, connecting Honshu and Shikoku, make it possible to travel to Kochi by car and train in addition to air travel. As Kochi is not a big city like Tokyo and Osaka, Japanese traditional culture, manners and customs remain here as they used to be.

 About Kochi University of Technology

Kochi University of Technology (KUT), a university of partnership, enrolled its first students in 1997. KUT objective is to be a center of flexible education and research where students can develop an attitude that spontaneously responds to the challenge of problems. There are 5 interdisciplinary departments aimed at creating a systems engineering that serves human, social and environment concerns.
KUT is 9 km away from Kochi airport and 20 km from Kochi city. Its spacious campus houses the most up-to-date teaching and learning facilities, a 600-seat auditorium and two 15-story fully furnished dormitories for over 200 students.

  • KUT map
There are two entrances for taxi. If you plan to check-in dormitory first, please tell the taxi driver "KOCHI KOKADAI dormitory" (KOCHI KOKADAI = Kochi University of Technology) or point to in the map below. If you are going to the auditorium or cafeteria directly, please tell the taxi driver "KOCHI KOKADAI HIGASHIMON" (HIGASHIMON = east entrance) or point to .
