The 8th International Symposium for Social Management Systems (SSMS2012)

Society for Social Management Systems which was founded by Kochi University of Technology in 2005 had its 8th international symposium in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in conjunction with Taiwan Morakot Post-Disaster Reconstruction Council, Executive Yuan, Taiwan Construction Research Institute (TCRI) and National Taiwan University at Kaohsiung Ambassador Hotel from May 2nd to May 4th, 2012. This event received the extensive coverage on newspapers and TV in Taiwan.

Thanks to the cooperation and strong support from the SSMS president professor Jenn-Chuan Chern, who doubles as the CEO of the Morakot Post-Disaster Reconstruction, over 400 representatives from 19 countries are in attendance, and 166 academic papers were contributed.

SSMS2012 mainly focused on the disaster response and recovery. There were 6 Morakot Tyhoon themed sessions and one special session for 311 Tohoku Earthquake togher with 22 usual acadmic cross sectoral sessions.

We also had Taiwan’s president Mr. Ma Ying-Jeou as our honorable guest speaker in this symposium, and he remarked he hopes this event can serve as a platform for incorporating the view of the world community and Taiwan to be a provider of humanitarian assistance.

Our KUT president Taketo Sakuma, KUT chair, professor Hajime Okamura, 40 other KUT faculty members and students joined this symposium.

The special-topic lectures were given by prof. Liu Chao-han, academician of Academia Sinica, prof. Gordon MacBean, the elected president of the International Council for Science; Akira Omoto, professor of the Tokyo University of Technology: Nobuo Shuto, professor emeritus of the Disaster Control Research Center at the Tohoku University.

We went on study tour and visited the reconstructed permanent houses and an elementary school for indigenous communities suffered by Morakot Typhoon. Through this experience, KUT faculty members and students were moved by their public-private cooperation and their tenacious effort as well as volunteer spirit which helped victim of the disaster and accelerate the execution of reconstruction project.
