授業の目的 Course Objectives: 1. Students will learn the mechanics of summarizing technical documents, and will practice the skill of summarizing. 2. Students will learn the mechanics of critiques of technical documents, and will practice the skill of critique writing. 3. Each student will create a Technical English Writing Dossier, searching out good examples of English research papers in his/her field of study, and will learn to analyze the structure and style of those papers. 4. Students will learn the structure and composition of a formal research paper.
授業の進め方 Course design: For each type of technical English document (example: critique of a research report), this course has a cycle of activities: learn the structure of the document type; learn how to design such a document; write text using the design.

1-3. Writing summaries: structure and technique. 4-6. Writing critiques: unreal conditionals; evaluative language; inversions, special verb agreements; scare quotes. 7-9. Constructing a research paper: methods section; imperatives, commentary in results section. 10-12. Opening and claiming sections of a paper: introduction; claiming centrality; citation and tense; negative openings. 13-15. Discussion and levels of generalization in a research paper.
