Laboratory/research office Study of Lives and Psychometrics Laboratory
This laboratory aims to understand various regional problems relating to aging population and depopulation, and to get insights on how to resolve them. We use two extreme methodologies in social science: methodologies of life stories and psychometrics. Most people are seeking for coherence in their lives, regardless of whether consciously or unconsciously. Thus, it is reasonable to start with how people involved in specific regional problems have lived their lives and how they positions their current situation in their entire lives. We deal with relatively smaller samples, but aim to get deep understanding of them and to identify concepts that may be significant in understanding people and situations in more general contexts. Psychometric methodologies are combined if necessary. The regional problems we deal with includes cessation of driving by elderly people, urban-to-rural migration of young people, household adoption of seismic hazard mitigation measures, conservation of traditional artcraft techniques and arts, and acquisition and transfer of construction workers' techniques.
