KUT Doctoral Student Hani Saber Abdelsalam Farag Elbehiri Receives Outstanding Student Presentation Award at JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026
Hani Saber Abdelsalam Farag Elbehiri, a third-year doctoral student in the Space and Earth Exploration Systems Laboratory, under the supervision of Professor Masayuki Yamamoto, received the Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA) at the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026, held in May this year.
The OSPA is awarded based on a comprehensive evaluation of the originality of the research, its contribution to the relevant field, the clarity and logical structure of the presentation, and the presenter's ability to respond effectively to questions during the discussion.
Hani conducted an integrated analysis of a large fireball (meteor) observed over Japan in August 2025, combining data from optical, seismic, and infrasound observations. By integrating these multiple types of observational data, he was able to estimate the location and explosive energy of the fireball with high accuracy. The results showed a high degree of agreement with data publicly released by NASA.
The research findings are expected to contribute to a more accurate understanding of natural phenomena associated with meteors and to future research on disaster prevention. The study also demonstrated the importance of integrating multiple observation techniques, including seismic, infrasound, and optical observations, and revealed potential applications to future research on spacecraft re-entry.

About the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026
The JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026 is an international academic conference that brings together researchers, engineers, educators, science communicators, and students from around the world in the fields of Earth and planetary sciences and related disciplines. The meeting provides a forum for sharing a wide range of research findings, from fundamental scientific research to studies addressing global environmental issues and the relationship between Earth and planetary sciences and human society, while promoting interdisciplinary discussion and collaboration.
The 2026 meeting was held jointly with the American Geophysical Union (AGU) under the theme "Transformative Science for Life & Earth." A total of 10,318 participants attended the conference, with 6,006 research presentations delivered, making it the largest meeting in JpGU's history.
A total of 1,045 applications were submitted for the Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA), and Hani was one of the students selected to receive the award.
