Center Overview

Center Objectives

The speed at which deep learning and other AI-related technologies are evolving is quite unexpected, and research and development are being actively conducted around the world to move from the closed world of factories towards the utilization of robots in the open field by AI.
Through research toward and development of embodied AI, this research center will (a) focus on knowledge acquisition through robotics technology; (b) continue work to verify the validity of knowledge; (c) conduct research into evolutionary AI that will highly evolve both methods and usage of knowledge acquisition; and (d) conduct research into the foundations of next-generation robotics technology that will leverage characteristics of different robots to optimize cooperation among different robots.

Research Direction and Future Prospects

We create novel functionalities that arise from collaborations among multiple characteristics of light waves, among hybridized materials, and between light waves and materials by means of experimental techniques, theoretical modeling, and numerical simulations.

1. Establishment of knowledge acquisition and verification technology that utilizes embodiment and activity

Modern AI technology works with big data, and data for learning is important. Through research towards and development of embodied AI, we aim to establish foundation technology which can highly evolve both acquisition and usage methodology by emphasizing knowledge acquisition and continuing to actively verify the validity of knowledge.

2. Cooperation of different robots

In the emerging society where AI and robots will be widely used and even commonplace, we expect to see widely varied robots with different functions playing active roles. In such an era, we aim to build a framework for human thought and action so that different robots can cooperate and collaborate.
