Center Overview

Center Objectives

This research center will promote fundamental research on and applications of game AI algorithms, focusing on deep reinforcement learning. In particular, we will study frameworks such as AlphaZero and MuZero in terms of their applicability, computational costs, and compatibility with imperfect information games and probabilistic games, while also aiming to develop new technologies by combining those frameworks with technologies such as fuzzy theory and large-scale language models (LLMs).
We also plan to take advantage of the characteristics of game AI and conduct interdisciplinary research into applied fields such as neuroscience, materials science, and AI safety. By expanding research in this area, we hope to contribute to the advancement of AI technology and its implementation in society.

Research Direction and Future Prospects

1. Fundamental research on deep reinforcement learning frameworks

We will examine the applicability and limitations of deep reinforcement learning frameworks such as AlphaZero and MuZero, so as to provide a deep understanding of promising deep reinforcement learning frameworks.

2. Fusion of classical and cutting-edge AI technologies

We will conduct research towards the integration of classic AI techniques such as fuzzy theory, and cutting-edge AI techniques such as large-scale language models (LLMs), with game AI algorithms. This will provide the versatility needed for future applications in areas beyond game AI.

3. Application of game AI technology to different fields

We will apply technology derived from game AI research to fields such as neuroscience, materials science, and AI safety, so as to explore new scientific knowledge and the possibility of industrial applications. By expanding this research, we hope to contribute to the advancement of AI technology and its implementation in society.

4. Strengthening international collaborative research and dissemination

We will collaborate with top researchers both in Japan and abroad to promote international collaborative research, and will work actively to submit and present papers at top international conferences. We aim to create new research themes by hosting an international symposium once every one or two years.
