Life History and Psychometrics Laboratory
This laboratory works to develop an understanding of various regional issues related to aging population and depopulation, and to acquire insights as to how to resolve those issues. We use two extreme methodologies from social science: life histories methodology and psychometrics. Most people are seeking coherence in their lives, either consciously or unconsciously. Thus, it is reasonable to center studies around reports by people involved in specific regional problems about how they have lived their lives and how they position their current situations in their lives as a whole. We deal with relatively small samples, but aim our analysis at a deep understanding of the cases and the identification of concepts that contribute to an understanding of people and situations in more general contexts. Psychometric methodologies are applied when necessary. The regional problems we deal with include cessation of driving by elderly people, urban-to-rural migration of young people, household adoption of seismic hazard mitigation measures, conservation of traditional craft techniques and arts, and the acquisition and transfer of construction workers' skillls. |
