The capacity to adapt swiftly to changes in market trends constitutes one of the core factors of the competitive strength of a company. Competitive success is largely a question of how production responds to fluctuations in the market and is adjusted to sales and purchasing. In order to consider how production relates to sales and purchasing, we need to examine the flow of goods and information, which varies according to the production technology and market characteristics that underlie each particular industry and company. As the links between purchasing, production and sales show the actual state of the supply chain, I have been researching the various types of supply chain management (SCM) employed in Japanese companies.
