In Japan the number of construction disputes has increased steadily in recent years. In particular, contractors have begun bringing lawsuits against public works employers. In response, the government enacted a law in 2007 to accelerate the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). However, the use of ADR in the case of lawsuits by contractors against public works employers is still very rare in Japan. In our laboratory, the main research topics are construction contracts, dispute resolution and obstacles to the use of ADR in contractor suits against employers.
