Fluid Engineering Laboratory
Fluid mechanics is the study of the characteristics and behavior of fluids. Typical fluids are water and air, but in our lab we are concerned mainly with complex fluids made up of higher order structures than their constituent molecules, e.g., polymer melts and solutions, suspensions, surfactant solutions, liquid crystals and biological fluids. Complex fluids react to external fields and their structures can change in response to changes in the surrounding environment. We are currently using the characteristics of complex fluids in the development of extremely small actuators and sensors. |
