The library is closed on Sundays, national holidays and school anniversary day, and during the year-end and New Year holidays, the summer vacation and the break at the end of the school year.

Rules for library use

  • It is prohibited to chat, talk on cell phones, smoke, eat inside the library.
  • Please handle library materials and equipment with care. Never scribble notes on documents or take clippings from materials.
  • Those who borrow documents must take full responsibility for them and may not lend them to third parties.
  • In the case of damage or loss, the borrower may have to pay compensation in kind or payment of the actual value of the material.

Copying machine use

  • There is a copying machine by the 1st floor service counter (payment is in coins, 10 yen per sheet for black and white copying and 30 yen for color).
  • Copying of materials stored in the library must be in accordance with the Copyright Act. Please read the instructions below, “Copying materials stored in the library.”
  • When you wish to copy book pages or other materials, please fill in an “Application to copy materials” form before starting to copy. The application form is available at the 1st floor service counter.
  • Please return the materials to their original position as soon as you have finished copying.
<Copying materials stored in the library>
 Books and materials are subject to copyright.
  1. It is not permissible to copy entire copyrighted works. Copying should be restricted to less than half of any work.
  2. Copying of academic papers and other articles published in periodical publications (e.g. magazines) is limited to less recent publications (e.g. after the next issue has been published; or three months or more after publication). Please confirm such restrictions before copying.
  3. Copying is limited to one copy per person.
  4. Copying may only be done for the purposes of one’s personal survey or research.
  5. It is not permissible to make copies of a copy, nor to distribute copied material, whether for compensation or not.
  6. If some copyright problem arises, the person who made the copies must take full responsibility for that problem.

Using University of Kochi libraries

Since April 2015, it is possible to borrow materials from the libraries of University of Kochi if you have a KUT student ID card, faculty/staff ID card or library card. For full usage information, please see the guides for the various libraries, or inquire to the staff of the relevant library if you have any questions.

Faculty, staff and students

Entry and exit

  • To enter the library, one must have a student ID card or faculty/staff ID card. A card is also required for borrowing materials or entering the media study room.
  • To take library materials out of the library, you must complete the borrowing procedure. If you take material out without completing the borrowing procedure, an alarm will go off at the exit. If you hear an alarm, please go to the 1st floor service counter.

Reading inside the library

  • You can read books and materials freely in the library during the opening hours. After you have finished reading, please return the materials to their original position promptly.
  • Materials which have not been borrowed must be returned to their original position by closing time.

*3. Topical books kept on the 1st floor. It is not permissible to extend the loan period for topical new books kept on the 1st floor. It is permissible to extend the period for topical books kept on the second floor, the same as for general books (up to two weeks).
*4. It is permissible to borrow music CDs and materials for language study. Please go to the 1st floor service counter to sign out such materials. Up to five music CDs can be borrowed in addition to books and materials.
*5. During the summer or spring vacation, it is permissible to borrow materials for a longer period of time.
<Signing out of materials>
Please use the automatic borrow and return machine located near the 1st floor service counter. Your student ID card (or faculty/staff ID card) is required.
For borrowing unbound magazines, audio-visual materials or books with supplementary material, please complete the borrowing procedure at the service counter. You will need to present both the material and your ID card.

<Extending the loan period>
If your borrowed book is not overdue and no one has reserved it, you can extend the load period one time only. Please complete the extension procedure at the automatic borrow and return machine, MY LIBRARY, or at the 1st floor service counter.
Please note that you are not allowed to extend the loan period of new topical books kept on the ground floor.

<Returning>
After finishing the procedures at the automatic borrow and return machine, please leave your returned materials at the return counter. When the library is closed, you cannot use the automatic borrow and return machine, so in that case please put them in the adjacent book post.
Note: If you fail to return borrowed material by the end of the loan period, your borrowing privileges will be suspended. Please make sure to return all borrowed items within the loan period.

<Reservation>
If the book you wish to borrow is out on loan, you can reserve it. Please apply through OPAC (MY LIBRARY) or at the 1st floor service counter.

<Ordering materials belonging to the University of Kochi or Kochi Junior College>
Now you can search OPAC for materials belonging to the University of Kochi. If you wish to order such materials, apply through OPAC or at the 1st floor service counter.

<Materials which cannot be borrowed>
It is not permissible to borrow materials or books bearing the label, “In library use only.” These restricted items include newspapers, audio-visual materials (not including music CDs) and CD-ROMs.

<Other>
If you search OPAC and find out that the materials you wish to borrow are in a research lab, please inquire at the 1st floor service counter.
Materials located in the Tokyo satellite classrooms or Osaka classrooms are only available to students and faculty of the Entrepreneur Engineering Course.
To use a DVD or Blue-ray disc, please bring the case of the item you wish to see to the 1st floor service counter. You will be given the requested disc, headphones and a remote control so that you can view the media in one of the special booths.

Public users

  • The general public can use the library freely during the regular hours.
  • Reading inside the library does not require a library permit.
  • To borrow materials from the library, a library permit is required. Please follow the procedures below to receive a permit.
  • When taking material out of the library, you must complete the borrowing procedure. If you take out material without completing the borrowing procedure, an alarm will go off at the exit. If you hear an alarm, please go to the 1st floor service counter.
  • Although the library’s opening hours (including Sundays) are extended during examination periods, the extended service is only available for university affiliated persons. The general public are not allowed to use the library outside of regular hours.

  • You can read books and materials freely in the library during regular hours of operation. After you finish reading, please return the material promptly to its original position.
  • Materials which have not been borrowed must be returned to their original positions by closing time.

<Library permits>
Library permits will be issued to those who wish to borrow materials and take them out of the library. Please go to the 1st floor service counter with your ID, a certificate bearing your name and address (e.g., your health insurance card, driver’s license or student ID).
Term of validity: until the end of the academic year

Note: if there is a change in your place of your work, school or contact point, please inform the administration promptly.


<Procedures>
[Borrowing] Please bring your library permit and the materials you wish to borrow to the 1st floor service counter.
[Returning] Please return your borrowed materials to the 1st floor service counter within the period of the loan.
[Reservation] If the book you wish to borrow is out on loan, please come to the 1st floor service counter to reserve it. The staff will phone you when the book is available.
[Ordering]You can order library materials belonging to University of Kochi. Please apply at the 1st floor service counter. The staff will phone you when the book is available.

<Materials which cannot be borrowed>
It is not permissible to borrow materials or books bearing the label, “In library use only,” newspapers, audio-visual materials (except music CDs), CD-ROMs and certain other materials which an OPAC search indicates are stored in Tokyo satellite classrooms, Osaka classrooms or research labs.
<Facilities not for public us>
The following facilities are only available to university affiliated persons.
- Media study room (1st floor personal computer room)
- Information viewing room (to the left of the staircases on the second floor)
