List of Required SSP Application Documents for Prospective Applicants

NOTE

Only applicants who have obtained the permission of their preferred supervisor via KUT Online Pre-Application Form are eligible to submit the formal application documents.

We do NOT accept any formal application documents by e-mail.
ALL required documents (formal application) listed below must arrive by post at the International Relations Section by the deadline. The documents submitted will not be returned.

Required documents (Formal Application)

1. A copy of an email or other communication which clearly shows that your preferred supervisor has given permission to apply

Signed pre-application request --- After you submit online pre-application request form, you will receive an automated email contains your pre-application request as PDF attachment. Print it out and sign the last page of the pre-application request

Original bachelor's degree academic transcript in English or Japanese (Include date of issue)
Photocopy or English translation should be verified and bears FRESH school stamp by the university from which you received your bachelor's degree or by a notary public. An academic transcript should list all the courses you studied in each year, the marks or grades you achieved for each course and the grading system of your university.
【Note】 Electronically authenticated academic transcript and its English translation may be acceptable only if the conditions are met.

Original master's degree academic transcript in English or Japanese (Include date of issue)
Photocopy or English translation should be verified and bears FRESH school stamp by the university from which you received (or will receive) your master's degree or by a notary public.
【Note】
- Electronically authenticated academic transcripts and its English translation may be acceptable only if the conditions are met.
- If you are still working towards your master's degree, submit a provisional academic transcript.
- In case that an academic transcript is not available because the degree program does not offer course work but only research based, please submit a certificate issued by the university which states the program is research based (e.g. current enrollment certificate). Please let us know in case you cannot prepare such a certificate.
-If you acquired or will acquire two master's degrees or a higher degree, please submit academic transcripts for all the degrees you acquired or will acquire.

Original master's degree certificate in English or Japanese
Photocopy or English translation should be verified and bears FRESH school stamp by the university from which you received your master's degree or by a notary public.
【Note】
- Electronically authenticated degree certificates, and its English translations may be acceptable only if the conditions are met.
- If you are still working towards your master's degree, submit a certificate issued by the university which states the expected date of acquisition of your master's degree. Use KUT official SSP form No. 1.
- If you have already received your degree,
a) The certificate should clearly state that you have received your master's degree. Completion of a master's program is not sufficient.
b) Submit your FINAL (OFFICIAL) degree certificate. A provisional certificate is not acceptable.
- The certificate should be for the degree which is comparable to or is higher than the one offered at KUT (master's degree) after 18 years of education. (In the case you proceeded to the M. Phil program after Master's program, you should submit the certificate of your M. Phil program also.)

6. A copy of master's thesis in English
If the master's thesis is written in a language other than English, it is necessary to submit the abstract of the thesis in English. Those who are still working towards their master's degree should provide a written description of the contents of their master's thesis and of the progress of the research at that time.

Research Outline --- A detailed plan of the research you conduct after enrollment, in English and approximately one page in length.
In the research outline, please explain, in line with the objective(s) and the phases of the research, what you will do in each of the first, second and third years of your participation. For example, please include a description of: the materials and equipment that will be necessary; the procedures you expect to perform; and the short term goals you will set for each step of the overall process, in order to achieve your projected research results and to write with the appropriate timing the papers reporting your results.
【Note】
At least one academic paper reporting your research results must be published in a high-level peer-reviewed journal by the final defense.

8.

Two signed recommendation letters in English or Japanese
Use KUT official SSP form No. 2.
【Note】
- Each recommendation letter must be an original with original hand-written signature by your referee in the last page of the form. Copies of signed letters are not accepted.
- One recommendation letter must be from your master's program supervisor.

9. Original certificate of health in English or Japanese issued within the past 6 months
Use KUT official SSP form No. 3.
For those who are affiliated with a university, organization or company in Japan and have an annual health checkup, health certificates in different formats are also acceptable.
10.

Certificate of English ability
Submit the certificate of test results for one of the following: TOEFL iBT, IELTS, CET-6 or WSK(PETS-5)
【Note】
- Applicants must have one of the following score to apply: a minimum score of TOEFL iBT72 (Writing 17)*, IELTS5.5 (Writing 5.5), CET-6 or WSK(PETS-5), at least.
*The TOEFL iBT test can be taken in three approved ways officially: test at a test center, test on paper or test at home. KUT accepts all three options.
*IELTS is only accepted in the academic test format. KUT accepts scores from both test center-based exams and IELTS Online.
* CET-6 is an abbreviation for the College Education Test/全国大学英語六級考試 and WSK is for National Foreign Language Test/全国外语水平考试 in China. Both are for Chinese students.

【Criteria for Exemption from English Proficiency Tests】
If either condition ① or ② is met, the submission of a Certificate of English ability score will be waived.However, alternative documentation must be submitted.
① Individuals who have completed a program equivalent to a Japanese high school in the United States, Canada,
the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, or New Zealand, where the language of instruction was English.
- Individuals who met this condition must submit a copy of their high school graduation certificate.
② Individuals who have completed a master's program conducted in Englilsh in any country and wrote their master's thesis in English.
- Individuals who meet this condition must submit an original cetificate issued by the university, providing that entire master's program was conducted in English

Other documents: (If you have the following documents, please submit them )

1. Rank certificate (in English or Japanese) for bachelor's and master's program issued by the university, stating your rank in the class (e.g. 2nd out of 25 students )
2. Copies of your past publications
3. Copy of your passport or other identification documents such as citizenship certificate, birth certificate, etc.
