4. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

Applicants are required to meet all of the following conditions.

(A) Master's Program

(1) To have completed or to be expected to complete before enrollment 16 years of formal educational program equivalent to that of Japan, or to fulfill other requirements the university set to be admitted.
(2) To have other than Japanese nationality
(3) To have or have the intention to acquire the "Student" status of Japanese residence, at the time of entrance, in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act in Japan.
*Students who have completed less than 16 years of formal education should inquire us about eligibility well in advance of the application deadline.
*If you wish to apply for Entrepreneur Engineering Management Course, you need to meet the conditions below as well.
To be qualified at the N1 level by JEES(Japan Educational Exchanges and Services) or Japan Foundation. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to enroll to the university.
*If you wish to apply for Advanced Educational Practice Course, you need to meet the conditions below as well.
To have, or to be expected to obtain before enrolling into Kochi University of Technology, a first level teaching certificate for Japanese schools. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to enroll to the university.

(B) Doctoral Program

(1) To hold a degree from an accredited institution comparable to the master's degree offered at KUT after 18 years of education, or to be scheduled to acquire such a degree before the KUT enrollment date
(2) To have other than Japanese nationality
(3) To have or have the intention to acquire the "Student" status of Japanese residence, at the time of entrance, in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act in Japan.

5. APPLICATION PROCESS

(1) Complete and submit all required documents.

(2) Applicants wil be charged 30,000 yen examination fee as of application.

7. ADMISSION DECISION

All submitted documents will be carefully examined during the screening process. The applicant may be interviewed online or via other communication tool (or on-site, if necessary). Applicants will be notified individually of admission decisions before the date stipulated in Notification of Admission Decision above.

8. ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES

Successful applicants must follow the enrollment procedures. Along with the pass notice, Notification of Enrollment Procedures will be sent. In accordance with this, successful applicants must make the payments described below and submit the required documents within the specified time period. Until they have completed the necessary procedures, their admission will not be officially granted.

Enrollment Fee: 300,000 yen

(2) Payment Due Date
Please refer to term 6 "Admission Schedule". Successful applicants have to pay the above enrollment fee by the "Registration Deadline".

9. STUDENT FEES

Enrollees should pay tuition fee, in the 1st month each semester in accordance with the instruction given separately. Necessary payment for each semester is described below.

10. SPECIAL NOTICE

(1) Students in the field of economics and management will study or conduct their research at Eikokuji campus which is located in down town Kochi City, 25 km from the main campus (Kami campus).Doctoral students at Eikokuji campus are required to take classes once or twice a week at main campus. For master's students, the campus where you conduct research depends on which courses you enroll in and which supervisor you study under. The most common means of transportation between Eikokuji campus and Kami campus are bus or JR train, and it takes around one hour.

(2) If you are an applicant for the master's program and still studying in the bachelor's program, a verified original graduation certificate from the bachelor's program in English/Japanese issued by your university will be required before your enrollment can be complete. It is indispensable and should clearly state that you have graduated from your program. If you are not able to produce such a document, your enrollment will not be admitted.

(3) If you are an applicant for the doctoral program and still working towards your master's degree, a verified original master's degree certificate in English/Japanese from your university will be required before your enrollment can be complete. It is indispensable and should clearly state that you have acquired your master's degree. If you are not able to produce such a document, your enrollment will not be admitted.

(4) If your application to KUT is successful and your resident status in Japan is "Student", KUT will assist you in finding appropriate single accommodation.
At Kami campus, you can live in the International House if there is vacancy.
At Eikokuji campus, you can live in the Takasone Dormitory C if there is vacancy.
If you wish to bring your family members and live with them in Japan, or if you wish to change your accommodation, you must initiate your own apartment rental.
In any case, you need to bear your own costs.

(5) To complete the master's program, you need to meet all of the following conditions.

 a: 2 year's enrollment at KUT
 b: 30 or more credits earned including 18 credits or more in specialized area courses which are as a rule given as lectures
 c: Successful completion of the master's thesis defense after receiving necessary guidance from the faculty

(6) To complete the doctoral program (Engineering Course, Advanced Researcher degree), you need to meet all of the following conditions.

 a: 3 year's enrollment in a doctoral program at KUT
 b: 10 or more doctoral course credits earned
 c: Successful completion of the doctoral dissertation defense after receiving a preliminary assessment more than one year in advance of the defense.
 d: Two or more papers in high level peer-reviewed journals, published at least two months before completion of the program; this is the basic requirement for holding a dissertation defense.

(7) Master's students enrolled can obtain Master of Engineering or Master of Arts and Sciences depending on the research field.
Doctoral students enrolled can obtain Doctor of Engineering or Doctor of Philosophy depending on the research field.

(8) Newly admitted foreign doctoral students will be charge about 33,000 yen, and master's students will be charged about 23,000 yen as insurance premium (The prices are subject to change).

(9) 10,000 yen will be charged as dues for alumni association membership (The price is subject to change).

(10) If you are a doctoral student, please be advised that the abstract of your doctoral dissertation and results of your dissertation defense will be published on the web within 3 months after the conferment of your doctoral degree, and the full text of your dissertation will be published on the web within 1 year after the conferment of your doctoral degree.
In cases where it seems inappropriate to publish a doctoral dissertation on the web due to a patent application related to the research, or some other special reasons, Kochi University of Technology may suspend the publication of the full text of a dissertation, and publish only its abstract on the web. Even in such cases, if publication of the full text of a dissertation is requested, and Kochi University of Technology agrees to the necessity, the full text of your doctoral dissertation may be disclosed.

(11) Your personal information will be treated properly in accordance with KUT personal information protection policy, which is based on personal information protection laws, and it will never be used for any other purpose. For the full details of that policy, visit

13. Security Export Control

Kochi University of Technology(KUT)has established the Kochi University of Technology Security Export Control Regulations in accordance with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act for the purpose of contributing to the maintenance of international peace and security while giving due consideration to the sound development of academic research. KUT is implementing the appropriate security export control measures with regard to the provision of technology, export of goods, and admission of foreign nationals (international students, researchers, etc.). Should any of these regulations apply to you, there may be restrictions imposed on your desired research activities, or you may be unable to receive education at KUT. Therefore, please check with your prospective academic advisor before submitting your application. In addition, international students (all Degree-seeking Students and Visiting Students) who will be conducting educational and research activities at the university shall be required to sign a pledge at the time of admission.
