Laboratory/research office Materials Engineering in Functional Oxides
So-called "High-temperature superconductors (HTSC's)" have been discovered in 1986 by Bednorz and Müller (Nobel prize winners in 1987) in Cu-based metal oxides. This has developed physics of "strongly-correlated electron system" and has resulted in colossal magnetoresistance effect and high-performance thermoelectric materials. Electrical wire used at 77 K is one of the most promising application of the HTSC's in power transportation because of zero energy-loss. In this Lab., research on crystallographic chemistry and search for new superconducting materials in basic science, and that on development of thin-film superconducting wires in practical application are now in progress.
