We conduct fundamental and applied research on cloud and precipitation phenomena in order to better understand them and to improve prediction skills. Our current research topics are: 1) study of Arctic clouds and precipitation processes using a high-resolution numerical model; 2) towards an understanding of the processes underlying clouds and precipitation, evaluation of clouds and precipitation as simulated by numerical weather and climate models, using observation data sets obtained from satellites; and 3) study of the process of growth of cloud and precipitation particles. Future topics include the mechanism of heavy precipitation events; meteorological observation and prediction in Satoyama (the traditional Japanese agricultural landscape); and improvement of flood and drought forecasting.
Current research topics Crystal habits and ice nucleation processes for Arctic mixed-phase stratus Validation of numerical weather prediction and climate models with a satellite data simulator Development of cloud microphysical schemes Understanding fundamental processes of cloud physics
