Areas of specialization coastal engineering
Laboratory/research office Coastal Engineering Laboratory
Japan has long suffered a variety of coastal disasters, such as high waves and storm surges caused by typhoons, and tsunami generated by earthquakes. Coastal erosion and water quality degradation endanger the sustainability of natural environment. The Coastal Engineering Laboratory will develop countermeasures to these disasters; and enhance the value of the coastal zone through cutting-edge research on nearshore dynamics and marine material transport. Results of the studies will be applicable, for both Kochi Prefecture and the whole world, to the creation of seawalls with strong resistance to tsunami and storm surges; the development of countermeasures against potential Nankai Trough mega-earthquakes; the conservation of beaches; and the mitigation of sea level rise problems.
Current research topics Tsunami, Storm surge, Sediment transport, Beach evolution, Coastal erosion
