To support the creation of human-support robots capable of care-giving functionality for an aging, low birth-rate society, we are developing reliable safety technologies and evolutionary intelligence methods.
Human-support robots, a genuinely new technology frontier, differ in several important ways from industrial robots designed for handling goods. First, they must be capable of functioning with complete safety, since they will work with human beings. They must also have evolutionary intelligence so as to be able to understand human intentions and adapt to changing physical and psychological characteristics.
In that light, the goals of our laboratory are to develop a mechanism for ensuring safety and evolutionary intelligence algorithms to enable robots to understand human intentions.
